THE Ministry of Health (MoH), through its Chemistry, Food and Drugs Division, has issued a voluntary recall notice for several varieties of Merba Cookies.
The recall follows a food alert notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) after the discovery of small metal pieces in the affected products. The contamination is reported to have occurred during the production period spanning from December 7, 2023, to December 15, 2023.
The metal particles identified in the cookies vary in size and consist of thin and long pieces. MERBA B.V., the manufacturer, attributed the contamination to a broken agitator in a bakery fat storage tank, which has since been removed from production.
Consumption of the contaminated products poses a significant health risk, prompting the Ministry of Health to issue a public advisory. The affected cookies have been imported and are available for purchase locally. As a precautionary measure, the Ministry urges individuals who may have purchased these recalled products to cease consumption immediately and return them to the place of purchase whenever possible.
