COMMISSIONER of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher is being called upon to provide more police protection to pharmacies.
The call comes from former government minister Ramona Ramdial following the death of businessman Cheval Ramjattan at his Pills and Potions Pharmacy in Aranguez on Tuesday night.
Ramdial in a statement on Wednesday said, “Pharmacies are considered as an essential business and most operate late into night. In this regard pharmacies are most vulnerable to the criminal element plaguing the country.”
She said regular mobile police patrols, joint/army foot patrols and the issuance of Firearm Users’ Licences (FULs) for the business community must be expedited immediately.
“Millions of dollars are spent annually by the business sector in private security firms, CCTV cameras and other technologies to protect their businesses to no avail,” Ramdial said.
She added that the population has become weary of the ‘ole talk’ from both Government and Opposition members and the “knee jerk reaction” from the authorities charged with the responsibility of serving and protecting the citizens.
Ramdial said, “We are soon approaching that point of no return with the state of crime and criminality in T&T.”
