PLEASANTVILLE – THE house of a prison officer was shot at early on Saturday morning.

Police said Okang Harris, 43, was not at home when the shooting occurred.

Reports indicate that Harris’ daughter Makita was sleeping when she heard loud explosions around 1 a.m. She ran for cover until the gunfire ceased.

The police were called and saw several bullet holes in the front wall of the house.

A prison officer for 23 years, Harris is assigned to the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca.

Only last week, Commissioner of Prisons Gerard Wilson warned officers to exercise caution and vigilance especially when off-duty.

In a statement Wilson said security would also be provided to officers who live in what are deemed “high risk” areas.

He issued the advisory “after several threats began circulating via the WhatsApp medium, indicating a plot to ‘kill any two officers’.”

And the National Security Ministry also assured that law enforcement and intelligence agencies were on high alert and working cohesively to support the safety of prison officers.
