PRESIDENT Christine Kangaloo confers senior counsel status to 17 attorneys including her husband Kerwyn Garcia and brother Colin Kangaloo.
But in her speech, President Kangaloo explained the process. She said, “I speak of the ‘culmination of a process’ because, under the arrangements that currently obtain, the process begins with the Honourable Attorney General, as the Titular Head of the Bar, inviting attorneys at law who consider themselves eligible, to apply to be awarded the status of Senior Counsel.
“The Honourable Attorney General then consults with the Honourable Chief Justice in relation to the applications that are received, and following upon and with the benefit of such consultation, the Honourable Attorney General then makes recommendations to the Honourable Prime Minister as to the award of the status of Senior Counsel from among the applicants. The Honourable Prime Minister considers the Honourable Attorney General’s recommendations and then advises the President on the attorneys at law who are to be awarded the status of Senior Counsel.”
The president of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago Lynette Seeberan-Suite was unable to attend the ceremony on Monday at President’s House due to the death of her mother. She will receive her instruments of senior counsel on a subsequent occasion.
So in total 18 attorneys will be given senior counsel status.
