Tributes poured in for former MP for Couva South, Rudranath Indarsingh, at the United National Congress (UNC) meeting in Debe on Tuesday.
After 15 years in Parliament, Indarsingh will be replaced by Barry Padarath, the former MP for Princes Town, who has been given the nod to contest the Couva South seat under the UNC banner for the April 28 general elections.

Indarsingh has thrown his support behind the UNC despite not securing a seat.
Former Barataria/San Juan MP Saddam Hosein said, “Tonight I want to acknowledge all of my colleagues from both the upper and lower Houses of Parliament, those officers of the national executive, former officers of the national executive, but tonight I want to give special acknowledgment to my dear brother, MP Rudranath Indarsingh, the former member for Couva South.” This was stated during a United National Congress (UNC) General Election Community Meeting at Oropouche East on Tuesday.
He said that Indarsingh has shown magnanimity and unity within the UNC.
Indarsingh has been a longtime member of the UNC and has represented Couva South in Parliament since 2010.
He has served as President General of the All-Trinidad General Workers’ Union (ATGWU) and was a vice president at the National Trade Union Centre (NATUC).
He also held ministerial positions, including Minister of State in the Ministry of Labour and Small and Micro Enterprise Development, and later in the Ministries of Works and Transport, Local Government, and Finance and the Economy.
Indarsingh was also awarded the Chaconia Medal (Silver) in 2005 for his contributions to trade unionism in Trinidad and Tobago.
At the meeting, Indarsingh welcomed his successor, Padarath, and expressed his confidence in a representative for Couva South.
He said, “Long live the people of Debe Junction, long live the United National Congress, long live the great people of Trinidad and Tobago. Tonight, as I leave this platform, I call upon the former Member of Parliament for Princes Town, the party’s organiser Barry Padarath, to come and deliver his address as he continues to be part of Team UNC, because when UNC wins, everybody wins. My brothers and sisters, I thank you.”
