The couple was arrested by a team of fraud investigators, led by Insp Smith, on May 17 who executed a search warrant at a house in La Horquetta.

During the operation, police officers allegedly found and seized a quantity of documents purporting to be issued by the Ministry of Planning and Development Town and Country Planning Division for the Grant of Spirit Retailers Licences and Notices of Grant of Permission to Develop Land.

The couple at the house was subsequently arrested and charged with the offences following further enquiries.

In a separate incident, another couple was also charged with land and car fraud charges.

The TTPS also reported on Monday that Damian Ramdath, 39, a self-employed truck driver and Nikita Keisha Mungal, 36, self-employed, both of Freeport,  were granted $80,000 and $50,000 with a surety, respectively, by Justice of the Peace Stephen Young.

They were charged by PC Ramkissoon of the Fraud Squad.

In the first incident, Ramdath was jointly charged with Mungal for obtaining $26,000 by false pretence following an investigation into a report in which a man told detectives that during May 2016 and June 2016, he allegedly paid the cash to a woman and a man as down payment towards the purchase of a parcel of land located in Exchange, Couva.

According to the man, he was led to believe that the sellers of the land were the owners, however, he later learned they were not.

In the second incident, a man reported to police that he paid a woman $5,000 as down payment for the sale of a Toyota Axio motor vehicle valued at $125,000.

The man told police that upon delivery of the vehicle, he was required to pay the balance of the money, however, the woman allegedly failed to deliver the vehicle and attempts to be refunded were unsuccessful.

Following enquiries, Ramdath and Mungal were indicted for the offences.

Mungal is scheduled to appear on May 31 at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court, while she and Ramdath will appear on June 17, to answer the joint charge.
