THE person who was fatally shot by police officers while attempting to steal a car in broad daylight on Monday has been identified as 19-year-old Kenley Clayton Samuel Gibbs from Tobago.
Police were able to retrieve his identification card.
The search is still on for his accomplice.
The vehicle, a grey Toyota fielder wagon was initially stolen at gunpoint by two men at Union Hall, near San Fernando at around 3 pm. The victim told police that he was also robbed of his wallet.
Immediately following a report made to police, officers engaged several departments including the Highway Patrol Unit, Anti-Gang Unit and Central Division Task Force.
Along the Solomon Hochoy Highway in the vicinity of the Couva Hospital and the Indian Trail Flyover, at around 3.45 pm, the vehicle was intercepted by members of the Central Division Gang Unit (CDGU) who were on enquires at that surveillance point.
The men fled from the vehicle, and gunshots were fired at the police officers in pursuit, police reported.
The officers had returned fire and struck one of the men who was taken to the Couva District Health Facility where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
