Police Find Shotguns Near Maritime Flyover

A 27-YEAR-OLD man was arrested following the seizure of two homemade shotguns and a quantity of ammunition police reported on Thursday.

The arrest was made by the Inter-Agency Task Force during an anti-crime exercise conducted in the Port-of-Spain Division on Wednesday around 10.30pm.

Officers were along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in the vicinity of Beetham Gardens, when they observed a white Nissan Almera motor vehicle parked on the side of the highway with two male occupants. A search of the vehicle resulted in five shotgun cartridges being found in a knapsack on the backseat.

The officers then observed another man exiting a bushy area and approaching the vehicle. He told the officers that the knapsack and the cartridges belonged to him and he led them to an area 150 meters off the roadway in the vicinity of the Maritime flyover.

The officers found two homemade shotguns in a bushy area. The three men were arrested and taken to the Besson Street Police Station for further questioning.

Officers subsequently obtained a warrant to search the St Barbs Road, Laventille home, of the third suspect, where they found 55 more shotgun cartridges.  The 27-year-old remained in custody, while the other two men were released.

Investigations are continuing.
