On Saturday, the Point Fortin District Scouts Council and the Point Fortin Borough Council will host a textbook distribution drive at Market Square, Point Fortin.

The Council endorsed the local Scouts initiative to provide free textbooks to students who at this time are short of textbooks.

Alderman Roamatie Smith, who chairs the Education Committee and School Community Alliance Committee, has been working alongside members of the Scouts team, led by District Commissioner Joel George.

With the help of school principals and teachers, both primary and secondary schools in the Borough and environs were asked to contribute books, as well as provide names of students who were interested in receiving books they still did not have.

Smith told AZPNews.com that some textbooks were already distributed to children whose names were provided by some schools and there were extra textbooks for the public to receive.

She said there were approximately 200 textbooks available for primary, secondary and tertiary level students.

Smith said, “We have asked parents to come with a book list and we will check to see what is available. Once we have the books, they can collect it for free.”

School children, parents and teachers can visit the Market Square, between 7 am and 12 noon.  Artiste Damien Melville is also expected to perform at the event. For further information, Smith can be contacted  at 382-3028.
