PRIME Minister Dr Keith Rowley says a solar energy project may take place on quarrying lands in eastern Trinidad.
He said significant acreage of eastern lands in Trinidad is being used for quarrying.
The prime minister said, “They were torn up to extract sand and gravel but there has been virtually no reinstatement of those lands.”
Dr Rowley was responding to questions posed by the media on the preservation of the environment at the VIP Lounge, Piarco International Airport on Saturday. He returned from the United Nations climate conference in Scotland.
He said, “If we get the appropriate funding, we could some serious reinstatement done on those lands and then use those areas for the location of possible solar panel business, as the lands cannot be used for agriculture.”
Dr Rowley said, “We need to enforce the law and protect the environment from illegal activities and quarrying was one of them. We need to focus on an objective on reinstating the lands.”
He said, “It all comes down to whether we can access the Green Climate Fund which we raised in our presentation at the UN Climate Change Conference (C26OP).”
