UNITED States President Donald Trump has announced that a new “Security Initiative” for the Western Hemisphere will be the focal point of the highly anticipated Shield of the Americas Summit, scheduled for tomorrow.
The announcement came via a social media post on Thursday, during which the President also revealed the first major personnel shake-up of his second term: the dismissal of Kristi Noem as US Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS).
Noem will not be leaving the administration, however. Trump announced she has been designated as the Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas, a newly created position designed to spearhead the administration’s fresh security agenda in the region.
“I am pleased to announce that the Highly Respected United States Senator from the Great State of Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will become the United States Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), effective March 31, 2026,” Trump wrote.
He added that Noem “has served us well” and will now lead “our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere.” Mullin’s appointment to head the DHS will require confirmation by a congressional vote before he officially assumes the role at the end of the month.
The diplomatic pivot to regional security sets the stage for the Shield of the Americas Summit, which will take place at the Trump National Doral Miami hotel starting at noon on Saturday.
Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Guyanese President Dr Irfaan Ali are slated to join several Latin American leaders at the high-level talks. Notably, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar will be one of only two female heads of state at the summit, alongside Honduran President Xiomara Castro.
Following the announcement of her reassignment, Noem took to the social media platform X to thank the US President for her new position while defending her tenure at the DHS.
“In this new role, I will be able to build on the partnerships and national security expertise I forged over the last 13 months as Secretary of Homeland Security,” Noem stated, attaching a list of what she described as “historic accomplishments” achieved by the department under her leadership.
