PM Acknowledges Consulate’s Role in Diaspora Engagement

PRIME Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has acknowledged the work of the Consulate General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in Miami in advancing the country’s bilateral engagement in South Florida and other areas within its jurisdiction.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Persad-Bissessar shared details of her visit to the Consulate shortly before returning to Trinidad and Tobago later that day.

Persad-Bissessar had left Trinidad and Tobago on March 7 to participate in the Shield of the Americas Summit in Doral, Florida.

Following the summit, the Prime Minister held a series of engagements with members of the Trinidad and Tobago diaspora in South Florida. On March 10, she was recognised by the City of Lauderhill, where Mayor Denise D Grant declared March 8 as “The Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar Day.”

In discussing her visit to the Consulate, Persad-Bissessar said she met with members of staff and expressed appreciation for their service in representing Trinidad and Tobago abroad.

“The Prime Minister further acknowledged their ongoing efforts to support nationals and advance the country’s bilateral engagement in South Florida and other accredited areas of jurisdiction,” the post stated.

The Prime Minister added that the courtesy call provided an opportunity for staff to engage directly with her and reaffirm the Consulate’s role in promoting national interests, strengthening partnerships and assisting the Trinidad and Tobago diaspora.

Persad-Bissessar returned to Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday evening. In her absence, Minister of Works and Infrastructure Jearlean John served as Acting Prime Minister.
