THE Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP) will be doing its own monitoring of the bye-election in Debe South on Monday especially since polling cards with wrong names have been showing up at persons’ homes.

PEP’s political leader Phillip Alexander told AZPNews.com that the party was taking seriously reports of polling cards at addresses where no such person resides.

He said, “We have compiled a list of suspicious polling cards at wrong addresses whose names also appear on the list of eligible voters.

“We will have polling agents in each station and exit polling stations of our own 100 feet from every polling station to be on the lookout for irregularities including if these suspicious names show up to vote.

“If they do, we will ensure that the police verified where in Debe South they actually reside just in case these fraudulent cards are examples of voter padding, a serious crime.”

The PEP is contesting the election along with the United National Congress (UNC) and the People’s National Movement (PNM).

Hemant Maharaj, of Cuchawan Trace, Debe told AZPNews.com that he found two cards in his mailbox bearing wrong names and he was confused.

Chief election officer of the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) Fern Narcis-Scope also told AZPNews.com that even if a person did not receive a polling card and their name was on the voting list, they would be eligible to vote and that those cards can be returned to the EBC’s Penal/Debe sub-office.
