COMMITMENTS have been made to address the public utilities backlog in Tobago.

A press release from the Ministry of Public Utilities on Friday, stated Minister of Public Utilities Barry Padarath had met with Tobago House of Assembly’s (THA) Division of Settlements, Public Utilities and Rural Development Secretary Ian Pollard to discuss the accessibility of public utilities in Tobago.

The main concern was the backlog at the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC).

The release stated, “These delays continue to affect residents and property owners who have already paid for their connections but remain unable to access their services. The delegation noted that the situation has created further difficulties, including delays in securing approvals for construction and additional charges for those who have taken loans to build.”

To address the problem Padarath gave both utilities companies a directive to compile lists of customers who had paid for their connections but had not yet been connected, within the next two weeks.

The release stated, after this was completed “a programme of works to complete all outstanding connections will be prepared and executed to ensure that these outstanding connections are completed in the shortest possible time.”

Commenting on the meeting and the thrust to complete outstanding connections, Padarath said, “No citizen should be disadvantaged after making the required payments for utility connections. We are committed to holding our agencies accountable, identifying the gaps, and implementing solutions that ensure fairness, efficiency, and timely service delivery to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”

The Ministry confirmed their commitment to the THA to resolve this problem in as little time as possible.
