THE Opposition says it is deeply concerned by the lack of information coming from government officials regarding the proclaimed State of Emergency (SoE).
A statement from the Opposition at 12.44 pm stated that as at 11 am on Friday, there was only official word from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS).
“The declaration of a State of Emergency is a serious measure that has direct implications for the rights and freedom of every citizen, It is critical that such a decision is accompanied by transparency, accountability and leadership,” the Opposition stated.
It also stated that it was currently reviewing all available information in the public domain including to SoE Regulations and the transcript of the TTPS press briefing which was held at the Police Administration Building in Port of Spain.
The Opposition said it will review all information and provide a further statement following internal consultation.
The release stated, “It is our hope and expectation that by that time, the government will have fulfilled its responsibility to the nation by publicly addressing the factors that led to the declaration and by engaging citizens directly on the way forward.”
The Opposition acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and reaffirmed its support for law enforcement bodies.
The communication concerning the SoE began on Friday morning with a TTPS press release at 6.20 am.
It continued with a police press conference just around 9 am and a press conference with the attorney general at 12 pm.
The prime minister issued a statement at 1.41 pm.
