PRIME Minister Dr Keith Rowley’s announcement on the reopening the economy on Saturday was made as if “he was opening his fridge door” lacking strategic policies on national improvement.
This is according to Opposition Senator Jearlean John.
She said the Government has once again failed to provide the population with measures to effectively deal with the Covid-19 pandemic and the negative effects on the economy, education, employment and mental health adding that women were the most vulnerable.
John was speaking at the Opposition’s media briefing on Sunday.
“Unsurprisingly, Dr Rowley failed to realise that simply lifting restrictions is not enough. We felt that he just announced it as if there was no economy and he was opening his fridge door,” she said.
John said instead of tackling serious issues such as the rising cost of food, the prime minister keep blaming global factors including the Russia/Ukraine war.
She said, “Are you just going to leave them and just say, ‘sesame open’ and ‘abracadabra’? How are we going to recover? We want a prime minister to tell us – ‘I’ve got you,’ not control yourself and ‘you’re on your own’ because I’m opening up…’if you know what is good for you, you better behave.’”
She spoke about US President Joe Biden giving a message in Poland and by extension the world to not be afraid in the face of all the challenges and said Dr Rowley should be doing the same.
“If it is you challenge the people of Trinidad and Tobago and you inspire them, there is nothing that the people of T&T cannot do. So, today, we need a visionary leader, an inspirational leader, a unifier.”
