The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is saddened following the shooting of Police Constable Quianna Mahabir, 30, of Caroni.
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning as PC Mahabir was returning home.
According to initial reports, around 1.35 am on October 22, 2024, PC Mahabir, who is attached to the TTPS Band, was driving a white Mazda with another occupant after being picked up at Piarco International Airport.
Upon arriving at her residence, she waited for the gate to close when another vehicle approached. Two suspects, one armed, exited and attempted to open her car’s locked doors. Multiple gunshots were fired, injuring Mahabir in the body and head. The suspects fled, and she was transported to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex for treatment.
The TTPS stands with PC Mahabir’s family, friends, and colleagues during this challenging time, it stated in a release.
Commissioner of Police, Erla Harewood-Christopher, strongly condemned the attack.
“This tragic attack is a stark reminder of the risks our officers confront daily. It follows recent incidents where two other off-duty officers were fatally shot. The widespread availability of firearms continues to fuel violence and crime in our communities,” the commissioner stated.
She said the TTPS is committed to combating gun violence and pledged to remove illegal firearms from the streets and ensure public safety.
Harewood-Christopher said, “We are actively investigating all three incidents and are determined to apprehend those responsible. We urge anyone with information to contact the nearest police station or call 555, 999, or CRIME STOPPERS at 800-TIPS.”
