An off-duty police officer was at a supermarket in Princes Town when two men announced a robbery around 5.15 pm on Saturday.
Police said the victim handed over a quantity of cash to one of the suspects, one of whom had a gun.
The officer got into a struggle with one of the men who shot at him in the supermarket at Edward Street in Princes Town.
The officer drew his licensed firearm and returned fire.
The assailants ran out of the building into a green Nissan Almera and the officer shot at the vehicle damaging the rear windshield window before the suspects drove off.
Officers of the Princes Town police station responded to the report and received information that a man was seen lying unresponsive on the road way in Dyers Village with an apparent gunshot wound.
A green Nissan Almera, with a damaged rear windshield was also parked on the side of the road.
Officers responded and took the injured man, a 28-year-old of Barrackpore, to the San Fernando General Hospital for treatment.
A 30-year-old Penal man was also subsequently detained in connection with the incident.
