FORMER government minister Karen Nunez-Tesheira has signalled her intention to challenge Dr Keith Rowley for the post of political leader of the People’s National Movement (PNM).
Nunez-Tesheira the former Minister of Finance under the PNM government (2007-2010) shocked many with her announcement over the weekend.
On Saturday, the PNM’s Election Supervisory Committee held a press conference to discuss matter relating to the upcoming election.
In a confirmation statement, Nunez-Tesheira pledged loyalty to the PNM but said change was needed and was even approached by other people in the party to contest the leadership.
On WYZE 95.9 FM on Saturday, Nunez-Tesheira spoke about her intentions to take over leadership from Dr Rowley who has been at the helm of the party since 2010.
She said Dr Rowley was good as a friend but a disappointment as a leader.
Nunez-Tesheira said, “I believe that I have a responsibility, whilst I am here on this earth and part of my country… love of my country and the experience that I have had and the education and all that goes with it offer myself in service to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”
Last month, in a letter published in the Express, Nunez-Tesheira called on Dr Rowley to clear her name regarding the collapse of CLF (CL Financial) which took place while she was Finance Minister.
The report which was commissioned by the People’s Partnership Government in November 2010, with proceedings beginning in 2011 and ending in 2013, was yet to be released she stated.
Nunez-Teshiera wrote, “I am, therefore, kindly requesting the Prime Minster to disclose publicly that the report made no allegations of wrongful conduct on my part regarding my role in CLF during my period as minister.”
