No Water Central, South: Shutdown at Point Lisas Desalination Plant

RESIDENTS in parts of Central and South West Trinidad will experience a disruption in their pipe borne water supply beginning Friday due to the shutdown of the Point Lisas Desalination Plant.

In a release on Friday, the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) stated the facility was shutdown for emergency repairs to a 42-inch diameter raw water pipeline.

WASA indicated that the Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (DESALCOTT) operated and owned facility, normally supplied WASA with 40 million gallons of water per day (mgd).

“DESALCOTT’s management has indicated that operations at the plant will ramp down throughout the day and production will halt by 6pm, however, no timeframe has been given for the completion of the repair works.”

The areas that will be affected include:

Central

Caroni, Warrenville, Cunupia, Chaguanas, Caparo, Chase village, Couva, Pt Lisas, California, Claxton Bay, Plaisance Park, Pointe a Pierre, City of San Fernando, Vistabella, Marabella, Gasparillo.

South West

Union Hall, Pleasantville, Palmiste, Philippines, Duncan Village, Esperance, Gulf View, Bel Air, La Romain, South Oropouche, Otaheite, Rousillac, Aripero, parts of La Brea, Avocat, Fyzabad, parts of Siparia including De Gannes Village and Quarry Village, San Francique, Debe, Syne Village, Lowkie Trace, Sunrees Road, Mora Dam Road.

WASA said, “A limited truck-borne water service will be available with priority given to special homes, health care and government institutions.”

Therefore, customers are asked to manage their water use efficiently as it may take up to 48 hours for the supply to normalize to some affected areas after the plant returns to full operation.
