THE Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (DESALCOTT) has stalled its planned shutdown operations because of the adverse weather.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Public Utilities said it took note of a media release by the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) that a planned schedule shutdown was carded for that day and continuing on until December 3.

The release stated that Minister of Public Utilites Marvin Gonzales believed that the planned shutdown should be immediately halted given the grave situation of so many affected by flooding.

The ministry stated, “Any shutdown of the plant now will only negatively impact our citizens, especially with a number of surface water treatment facilities being out of operation because of turbid river conditions and widespread ruptures of transmission and distribution pipelines thereby impeding WASA’s ability to satisfy the needs of its customers during this trying period.”

WASA subsequently issued a release stating that the shutdown has been postponed.

The plant located in Pt Lisas produces 40 million gallons of water on a daily basis and supplies water to the Point Lisas Industrial Estate and customers in south and central Trinidad.
