THERE is a higher risk of persons contracting myocarditis or heart muscle inflammation from Covid-19 than the Pfizer vaccine.
The secretary of the Paediatric Society of Trinidad and Tobago Dr Mariama Alleyne said that myocarditis is extremely rare post Covid-19 vaccination.
Dr Alleyne said, “It usually occurs in the older teenagers, 16 and above and young adult males up to the age of 30 and from all the studies done in Israel, in the United States and in the United Kingdom, all of these patients who experience this very rare phenomena have had mild disease and recovered without any special treatment and they have certainly been no deaths related to the myocarditis associated with the Pfizer vaccination.”
Dr Alleyne said people stood a greater chance of contracting myocarditis from the Covid-19 virus than from the vaccine.
In giving statistics on figures coming out of the United Kingdom, she said that there were 76 cases per million of person between 12 to 17 years old getting myocarditis after contracting Covid-19 and 450 persons per million between 18 to 30 years old contracting the disease after getting Covid-19.
De Alleyne said if people think they are experiencing myocarditis after receiving their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine, they should look out for signs of palpitations, shortness of breath, and chest pains.
