DESPITE the inclement weather brought on by the passing of a Tropical Wave, no significant or widespread storm damage has been reported.

In a press release on Tuesday, the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government (MoRDLG) reported that while some areas experienced “short-term street and residential flooding” there had been no significant or widespread impact from the heavy rains on Sunday.

The Ministry noted the recent flood mitigation work carried out by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, along with the clean-up campaigns of the Municipal Corporations, contributed to reducing the “potential impact of the tropical wave and preventing more severe outcomes.”

Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen said, “We are thankful that this weather system did not result in major damage or loss. I extend sincere thanks to our dedicated Disaster Management Units (DMUs) teams and local government personnel who continue to serve on the front lines, ensuring that citizens are supported and that normalcy is restored as quickly as possible.”

The Ministry stated that all DMUs continue to remain on alert and monitor conditions closely, especially in areas prone to recurrent flooding and landslides.

An Adverse Alert was issued this past weekend by the T&T Meteorological Service (TTMS) as a Tropical Wave passed near the country.

Although most of the nation was spared, Central Trinidad was hardest hit, with reports of severe flooding and property damage in the Charlieville area.

Many residents spent Monday cleaning up after their homes and businesses were affected by flooding. Residents blamed the poorly maintained drainage systems, especially those connected to the highway.

Chaguanas West Member of Parliament Dr Colin Gosine was on the scene on Monday assessing the damage and assisting his constituents. He noted there appeared to be erosion of the drainage system and assured the residents he would hold discussions with the relevant ministries to have the problem addressed.
