MUD volcanoes erupt on in Cascadoux Village, off the Manzanilla/Mayaro Road, on Friday morning.
According to a release from Mayaro MP Rushton Paray, the mud volcanoes have surfaced at Lp#120 Cascadoux Village at the residence of Rakesh Seecheran.
Paray said the mud volcanoes were causing concern among local authorities and residents.
He said initially, the seepage from the mud volcanoes exhibited a circular shape with a diameter of approximately two feet.
Paray said, “However, as of the 9 am , the situation has evolved, prompting a coordinated response from various agencies.
“Presently, several agencies are actively engaged at the site, including the Disaster Management Unit (DMU), Municipal Police and Mayaro Fire Service.
“The dimensions of the mud volcano have expanded, now measuring two feet in width and four feet in length. An unusual characteristic of the phenomenon is the intermittent release of gas, occurring in 63-second intervals, adding to the complexity of the situation.
“To ensure public safety, access to the immediate area has been restricted. Recognizing the significance of this event, a specialist from the UWI Volcano Unit is en route to the site to conduct a comprehensive assessment.
“In the interest of public welfare, nearby residents have been safely relocated. Furthermore, preparations have been made at the Mayaro Civic Center, which stands ready to serve as a shelter should the need arise.”
He said the Mayaro Rio Claro Regional Corporation was closely monitoring the situation.
Paray said, “Public safety remains top priority, and all residents are urged to heed the guidance of local authorities during this unexpected occurrence.”
