OROPOUCHE East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal says blood is on the hands of Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan in the auto crash at Solomon Hochoy Highway, Debe, which left four people badly injured.
On July 30, four men from the Trincity area crashed into concrete barriers at the end of the highway at Gandhi Village in Debe just after 4 am.
And on July 31, a Cunupia man lost his life at the same location where crashed into the same block.
In a statement on Saturday, Dr Moonilal said, “The temporary endpoint of the Solomon Hochoy highway at Debe Suchit Trace has claimed too many lives and injured several.
“Under Mr Sinanan’s leadership, the Ministry recklessly removed or altered all the safety precautions that had been instituted to prevent accidents and to safeguard motorists’ lives.”
He added blinking lights at the top of barrels toward the temporary end of the highway were removed, a floodlight was turned into the eyes of oncoming motorists and relevant warning signs are much too small.
Dr Moonilal said the ministry has not placed rumble strips, an important road safety feature that alerts motorists of potential danger by vibrating the vehicles.
He added there was also a need for amber lights toward the end of the highway as a further warning to motorists.
In addition, the Government has clearly abandoned further construction of the highway, thereby turning the temporary Debe exit into the end of the roadway.
Dr Moonilal said, “The auto accident on Saturday and prior mishaps could have been averted if Mr Sinanan had implemented appropriate measures to caution motorists about the approaching turnoff.
“The carelessness and irresponsibility of Mr Sinanan’s Ministry are typical of the incompetence and heartlessness of the PNM regime,” he added.
