TWO packs of ketchup, one pack of mustard and one pack of pepper for $2.

That is the price Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) customers now have to pay for condiments.

A video circulating on social media showed a customer being told, he now had to pay for the condiments which were usually given free of charge with the purchase of a meal.

Simon Hardy, Chief Executive Officer of Prestige Holdings, the franchise holder for KFC in Trinidad, had confirmed the price increase and also said the reason was the global increase of prices.

However, customers were not too pleased about being charged extra for the condiments and took to social media to express their dissatisfaction.

With the additional cost, customers said they will use their ketchup at home.

One told AZPNews.com, “They’re always forgetting it in my order either way. Let me use my Swiss ketchup and homemade pepper for whenever I feel like ordering. As a friend on Facebook said… ‘Royal Castle would never…'”

Another said, “I have ketchup home… and maybe finally use up the Ziplock bags of packets.”

She also suggested that they charge for the plastic cutlery to eliminate single-use plastics or replace them with something more eco-friendly.

Another woman said, “I will use what I have available at home. We have to stand up in some way against exploitations of this sort. This is not welcome at this time, same thing with increased fuel prices, utility prices and now the dreaded property taxes on a population that nearly every day someone is losing their job with no good prospects for finding close to what they had in the country. Instead of extra taxation, and raised prices of utilities, why are there not more opportunities created for making revenue so that persons can be employed once more and thus increase the normal spend?”

Rising food prices – the bigger issue

Speaking with AZPNews.com, MovieTowne’s owner Derek Chin said increasing cost was inevitable, the vulnerable was going to suffer more and the impact was going to be severe.

He lamented about the lack of proactive measures.

Chin said, “The cost of everything has gone up because of geopolitical and global factors of which we have no control.  Post pandemic demand and out of wack shipping costs, oil prices and the Ukraine war are some of these events that have impacted on costs throughout the world. Added to an inefficient local and backward thinking administration that has done little to prepare the country for these difficult times, mismanagement of the economy and poor leadership with a lack of innovative ideas.  Always a follower and never a leader in changing times.”

He also said for the movie theatres, there was the possibility of using packs of condiments instead of the current buffet-style to avoid wastage but that would not be an additional cost.

And Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Monday night spoke about the rising cost of food items following protests on Saturday by the UNC’s Women’s Arm.

Taking a jab at Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and mentioning the additional condiment cost, she said, “That is to tell you how bad things are under  Rowley.”
