THE Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation is stepping up efforts to improve road safety.
Led by Minister Eli Zakour, the focus is on modernising traffic systems through a united, multi-sectoral approach, said the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation via a media release on Thursday.
In a recent engagement with Arrive Alive on road safety, several new proposals were reviewed, including enhanced nighttime speed enforcement, expanded early-stage road user education, and strengthened partnerships across sectors.
Many of these align with the Ministry’s current strategies, presenting new opportunities for coordinated action. The Ministry’s technical units will now assess the proposals further.
The collaboration will also extend to the National Road Safety Awards Ceremony set for June 11, with both parties committed to continued partnership.
Zakour also met with Chief Traffic Engineer Adande Piggott and Chief Traffic Warden Neville Sankar for updates on key initiatives. These include improvements to traffic signalisation, increased data collection to guide interventions, and enhanced visibility and coordination of traffic wardens in congested areas.
Discussions reinforced the Ministry’s commitment to a strategic framework based on the “3 E’s” of road safety, Education, Enforcement, and Engineering. This approach aims to foster responsible road use through public education, enforce compliance, and upgrade infrastructure to make the nation’s roads safer and more efficient.
