DISASTER Relief Grants totalling almost $25,000, are being distributed to families affected by flooding in the Mayaro/Rio Claro district.
In a press release, the Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services said disaster relief grants totalling almost $25,000 were presented to three families who were severely impacted by flooding in the Mayaro/Rio Claro district earlier this year.
The grants were presented at a small ceremony by Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services Vandana Mohit, Senator Dr. Natalie Chaitan-Maharaj and Member of Parliament for Mayaro, Nicholas Morris.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mohit said, “Our role is to help and empower citizens to live in dignity and comfort, especially when disaster strikes. This support brings a measure of relief and restores hope as families begin to rebuild their lives.”
In June, Trinidad and Tobago was affected by severe weather that caused flooding, landslides and road damage islandwide.
According to reports from June 11, the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government distributed approximately 60 sandbags in the district to mitigate flood damage. Residents were affected by a number of downed trees and street flooding.
