RECOMMENDATIONS are going to be made soon to the Ministry of Health relating to food items purchased by consumers.
This is according to Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram.
Dr Parasram was asked on Wednesday during the Ministry of Health’s Covid-19 update if the ministry may be recommending that the cost of healthy food items be made more affordable to the population.
The ministry has been encouraging healthy eating habits on its weekly press conferences and this week launched World Salt Awareness Week urging citizens to reduce their salt intake.
Dr Parasram said the Food Advisory Committee was now being chaired by a new coordinator and also included the chief nutritionist at the Ministry of Health, the director of Food and Drug Division, stakeholders from the Ministry of Trade and others.
The Food Advisory Committee assists and advises the Minister with respect to food standards, labelling and other matters connected with the manufacturing and distribution of food.
Dr Parasram said, “A lot of recommendations may be coming out of them very soon and we will take it into consideration when they make those recommendations but we will look to them to those types of recommendations, of course, looking at what is outside as well and the policy decisions will be taking by the Cabinet and the Government of the country.”
