Major Electricity Outage Hits Trinidad

TRINIDAD has been without electricity since around 12.50 pm today.

The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) in a release just before 2 pm stated that there was a major disturbance of electricity.

It stated that the cause of the problem was still unknown.

The release stated, “Engineers and other technical staff, led by the General Manager, Mr. Kelvin Ramsook, are currently focused on resolving the matter as quickly as possible.

“T&TEC’s Independent Power Producers are restarting all their generators, to begin a gradual restoration of supply to all customers.

“The process of restarting and restoration will take approximately two to three hours.

“T&TEC’s 800 number hotlines were initially affected but are working again. Customers can still contact our Call Centre at 794 4823/ 7264, or 800-TTEC (8832) /BULB (2852).”

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service also issued a High Wind Yellow Level alert for Trinidad and Tobago.

It took effect from10.30 am today to 2 pm on Thursday.

It stated, “There is a high (85%) potential for windy conditions and gusts in the vicinity of 55km/h with higher gusts expected over the alert period.

“Such wind gusts may be brief but are capable of displacing unsecured roofs and loose outdoor objects.”

The electricity outage caused traffic lights to stop working with reports of this from Port of Spain heading east to Piarco.

WASA stated that the nationwide power outage has affected its water production facilities.

It stated, “As power is restored our facilities would be restarted and restored to all affected areas.”

Many offices across the country closed early sue to the outage.

The Ministry of Public Utilities stated that Tobago was unaffected.

In a release it noted that the IPPs would start the generators on a phase basis and should take about three hours.
