VOLCANIC ash from the La Soufrière volcano in St Vincent now covers the island.
Ash has also been reported in nearby islands such as St Lucia and as far south as Barbados.
Three loud explosions were heard on Friday with smoke coming out of the volcano.
Director of the University of the West Indies Seismic Research (SRC) Centre Erouscilla Joseph said lightning and thunder were emanating from the charged particles in the eruption column.
The SRC stated the volcano has entered an explosive eruptive phase that may continue over the next few days and weeks.
Explosions were expected to be of similar or larger magnitude as those that have already occurred, it stated.
The SRC stated that the tremors generated by energetic venting of volcano continued on Friday night peaking between 8 pm and midnight.
It stated that earthquakes have been recorded during the tremor.
