NEWLY-appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK) Rishi Sunak with his experience, intellect as well as determined drive is well-positioned to deliver a mandate that empowers holistic development.
This is according to Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar as she extended congratulations to the first non-white Prime Minister of the UK that comprises of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Persad-Bissessar said, “Having served as Chancellor, as a former Chief Secretary to the Treasury and former Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Local Government, the distinguished Member of Parliament for Richmond (Yorks) is well equipped, experienced, and possesses a potent vision to serve the best interest of the British people.”
She said his pathway to the top position in the country under King Charles III has been nothing short of inspirational, enriching, and prolific from being the son of immigrants to being elected as a MP for the first time in 2015 then to being appointed as Chancellor in 2020 and now within the space of seven years as a Parliamentarian, becoming Britain’s first Prime Minister of Asian descent.
Persad-Bissessar said, “As Mr. Sunak becomes the first Hindu Prime Minister of Britain, especially on the Holy day of Divali, there is hope that his leadership and vision will be a light on the global economy as well as the Commonwealth. The greatest strength of our world is diversity, and today we have had a major victory for diversity in the mother of all Parliaments.”
“Today, millions are proud of Rishi Sunak’s achievement in the diaspora while millions more throughout our global community look on with optimism for the role he and the British Government will play to continue to steady the ship of the global economy and development,” she added.
The Opposition Leader also offered “sincere wishes” Sunak’s predecessors Liz Truss and Boris Johnson who she said have offered significant contributions to public life and UK politics.
Sunak was elected leader of the Conservative Party on Divali day. He’s a practising Hindu and is expected officially to become the head of government when the British Parliament meets on Tuesday.
