KIND, humble and affable is how the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago is describing the late retired Senior Magistrate Rae Roopchand as they mourn his passing.
In a press release on Wednesday, the Judiciary stated, “On learning of the passing, colleagues described Magistrate Roopchand as a kind, affable, and humble senior colleague who generously offered sound advice on both law and administration to younger contemporaries. He displayed great empathy and patience in court with the members of the public.”
Roopchand, who served the Judiciary for 20 years, was recognised for his commitment to the fair and impartial administration of justice, the Judiciary stated.
“His judicial approach reflected a strong respect for due process, judicial independence, and the rights of those who appeared before the courts,” the Judiciary stated, “He was particularly regarded for his measured decision-making, sound legal reasoning, and courteous courtroom demeanour.”
The Judiciary stated Roopchand remained an active member of the judicial community, well after his retirement.
His contributions, they stated, formed “part of the institutional history of the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago.”
Upon his passing, the Judiciary stated, “His legacy of professionalism, mentorship and service will not be forgotten.”
