THE nephew of Acting Police Commissioner Mc Donald Jacob has been formally charged with the murder of former police officer and businessman Syed Mohammed.
Marcus Uriah Jacob, 35, handyman of Princes Town, together with labourer Daniel Harroo, 28 of Orange Valley, Couva, were charged with the murder of Mohammed, 46 a release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) stated.
The men are scheduled to appear at the Siparia First Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Detective Constable Vishal Ramoutar of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region Three Office laid the charges, following advice received from the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Joan Honoré Paul on Monday.
The men were also charged with Possession of Firearm, Possession of Firearm to Endanger Life, Possession of Ammunition, Possession of Ammunition to Endanger Life.
Additionally, Jacob was charged by Constable Deena for driving a motor vehicle bearing false number plates.
Around 9.15 am on December 12, Mohammed was in the front yard of his home on Katwaroo Trace, Penal when a white Nissan Versa motor vehicle drove from the street’s dead end and stopped where he stood.
A man armed with a handgun allegedly alighted from the vehicle and approached Mohammed shooting him several times.
Mohammed fell to the ground and the assailant allegedly returned to the vehicle which then sped out of the street.
Officers attached to the Emergency Response Patrol Unit (ERP) Southern Division, received a report of the shooting and quickly responded and intercepted the vehicle around 9.30 am while proceeding along Rahamut Trace, Debe. Upon searching the vehicle, they found one Glock 17 pistol with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The two men were arrested for possession of a firearm and ammunition. Superintendent (Ag) Sean Dhillpaul spearheaded investigations into Syed Mohammed’s death.
Jacob had confirmed that his nephew was known to police officers and has been charged several times in the past for involvement in illicit activities.
