The Trinidad and Tobago Intellectual Property Office (TTIPO) of the Ministry of Legal Affairs has joined the World Steelpan Day Celebrations at Woodford Square, Port of Spain.

Hosted by Pan Trinbago, participation in the event marked a significant milestone: the global recognition of the steelpan alongside its historic registration as a Geographical Indication (GI), the ministry stated via media release on Friday.

Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2023, World Steelpan Day, observed annually on August 11, celebrates the steelpan’s profound impact on fostering inclusive societies, promoting mental well-being, advancing gender equality, empowering youth, and stimulating the creative economy.

The 2025 theme, “From Roots to Resonance: Echoing Across Generations and Nations,” highlighted the instrument’s remarkable journey from its humble origins in Trinidad and Tobago to its global prominence.

The ministry stated, “In a monumental achievement for Trinidad and Tobago’s intellectual property landscape, the steelpan, the nation’s beloved national instrument, has been officially registered as a Geographical Indication.

“This designation legally affirms the steelpan’s specific origin and unique manufacturing qualities are deeply rooted in Trinidad and Tobago. The GI Committee, a standing committee under Pan Trinbago, now holds the exclusive rights to brand steelpans as authentically originating from the twin-island nation.”

The pursuit of this GI commenced in June 2023 through the CARIFORUM Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation (CarIPI) project, an international initiative funded by the European Union and co-funded and implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

The TTIPO played an integral role in the historic process.

“This GI provides crucial intellectual property rights, safeguarding the steelpan’s authenticity and protecting its rich cultural legacy globally while opening new economic avenues for the industry in Trinidad and Tobago,” the ministry stated.

The month of August is celebrated as National Steelpan Month with several activities planned mainly in Port of Spain.

Friday night is designated as Steelpan Oral History Night.
