ANOTHER segment of the highway to Point Fortin is open to the public.
On Sunday, Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan visited the stretch of newly paved road from Rousillac to the La Brea interchange.
According to Sinanan, the extension of the Solomon Hochoy Highway to Point Fortin was 98 per cent completed.
He encouraged motorists to not use the road as a racetrack, citing the number of road accidents caused by speeding.
Sinanan said, “The road is of world-class standard and you might be tempted to drive over the speed limit. I beg you to obey the speed limit. It is very tempting to see how fast your car can go. This is not the road for it.”
He continued to urge drivers, “Please take your time on the road. It is very nice to drive on, very encouraging, especially if you got accustomed to driving on the old Southern Main Road. This is a dream. If you all drive within the speed limit the roads are designed for, we would minimise accidents.
“Most of the fatal accidents we see is when people exceed the speed limit. Once you stay within that speed limit the road network would be a lot safer.”
Sinanan said with the new road, travel time will be cut significantly.
While motorists will soon have access to the entire highway, Sinanan said a few diversions were expected by the end of September.
Since 2016, five local contractors worked on that project: Namalco, Jusamco, Junior Sammy, General Earth Movers and Lutchmeesingh Transport Contractors.
