HEALTH Minister Dr Lackram Bodoe visited his former workplace on Tuesday on his second day on the job as minister.
The Ministry of Health via media release stated that Dr Bodeo undertook an unannounced visit to the San Fernando General Hospital and the San Fernando Teaching Hospital to gain a first-hand understanding of the current conditions and engage directly with frontline healthcare professionals.
Dr Bodoe is a former chairman of the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA).
During the visit, the minister expressed concern following the observation of significant infrastructural deterioration across various sections of the hospital. He noted that healthcare staff were operating under challenging conditions, which could potentially compromise both patient care and staff wellbeing.
However, he acknowledged the commendable morale and dedication of the staff despite the challenges, the ministry stated.
The release stated, “He (Dr Bodoe) further expressed disappointment that areas previously allocated for teaching and clinical training had been converted for administrative use, thereby depriving students of valuable hands-on learning opportunities in a clinical environment. The Minister also observed the underutilisation and visible decline of certain levels, such as level 18, raising broader concerns regarding maintenance and operational oversight.”
Dr Bodoe reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening the public healthcare system. He said, “Our patients and medical professionals deserve facilities that reflect our dedication to delivering high-quality healthcare.”
