Grenade Seized: 7 Held after Police Shooting

SEVEN men, including two foreigners, were held after a shoot-out with police, during a house search exercise in Manzanilla on Saturday.

According to a police report, Northern Division Task Force officers went to a house located along Calypso Road, Manzanilla to execute a search warrant for firearm and ammunition.

Upon arrival, the officers observed a group gathered at the front of the house. On seeing the approaching police vehicles several persons began running in a southerly direction towards the back of the house.

The officers gave chase and one of the men allegedly pointed a firearm in their direction. Both officers believing their lives were in danger and in keeping with the use of force policy discharged their firearms in the direction of the men.

A chase ensued and the officers subsequently subdued two men. A search was conducted of a 27-year old foreign national and one magazine containing seven rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition was allegedly found in his pants pocket.

A second foreigner, 36, was found holding a bandana. The officers gave him directions to drop same which he did and on examining the bandana, one hand grenade was found.

Both men were also observed to be suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to their legs, they were both taken to the hospital where they are listed in stable condition.

A search was conducted and allegedly one Taurus nine-millimetre pistol with two black-coloured magazines and six rounds of ammunition was discovered. Five other persons, all in their thirties were arrested concerning the find.

The scene was processed and the Grenade was made safe and removed by the Explosive and Detection and Disposal Unit of the Special Branch.
