COVID-19 is being used by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to conveniently oppress people and destroy businesses.

This is the view of head of the Citizens Union of T&T Phillip Edward Alexander in a press release on Sunday.

He said Covid-19 was being used to oppress persons, destroy businesses deemed competitive to certain people “and enforce dictatorial powers this puny virus does not warrant.”

Alexander said one person in the Chaguanas Market tested positive and the whole facility was closed.

He added, “Yet three people on the Tobago ferry were found to be exposed through contact tracing and out of an abundance of caution you refuse them disembarking in Tobago and sent them back to Trinidad.”

Alexander said husbands and wives in the same car were ticketed for breaching Covid-19 regulations but Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi “and friends could rub up on each other with impunity…”

He said, “Trinidad’s biggest problem is not Covid-19 or the broken economy or no water or no jobs or rapacious banks or our damaged international reputation or the failed health sector… or the failure of the state to prosecute the corrupt or low level crime, all of that could be fixed quickly.”

Alexander said the problem was Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and his politicians.

He said, “It’s the laws they are writing. The decisions they are making. The things they are doing.

“It’s time we the people put our collective attention to that.”
