IT was a super exciting day for football lovers as the group of death concluded arguable the best games in any day of the tournament on Wednesday.
The Sweden vs Poland in Group E was also a cracker. France were very lucky with the referee’s decision in their favour that saved them from a defeat and Germany had to scramble to stay in the competition in Group F.

The sleeping giant has awoken with a commanding performance and the most goals scored by a team in the tournament in a single game. Spain scored five goals, even after Álvaro Morata had a penalty saved (Spain have missed five international penalties in a row).
I had predicted a Spanish victory – but not of this magnitude. Wow! Martin Dubravka, the Slovak goal keeper became a villain after his penalty heroics and place the ball into the net to give Spain the lead in the 30th minute.
Spain dominated with 66% possession, 19 shots at goal and nine on target. It was an amazing performance and whichever team faces this rising Spanish team will have a true battle on hand.
Goals by Aymeric Laporte (48th), Pablo Sarabia(67th) and another own goal by Juraj Kucka (71st) gave Spain an enormous victory. This is now a deadly Spanish team, so look out Round of 16.
Magical Sweden
This was a super exciting game. Poland never laid down to die, even after going two goals down. They came roaring in the second half and equalised. Sweden then broke Polish hearts in added on time and topped the group with the win.

Emil Forsberg brace (2nd,59th) seemed to have sealed the victory for Sweden. Then it was the Robert Lewandowski show with a brace of his own in the 61st and 84th. Poland will rue their two sitters they missed in the first half because it would have given them qualification.
It will be a shame that Poland must no longer be part of the tournament. Viktor Claesson broke the polish dream in the 93rd minute with a wonderful goal which took Sweden to the next round as the top team in this group.

In this clash of the Titans, Portugal should have been the winners. The penalty won by Kylian Mbappe and scored by Karim Benzema in the 47th minute should have not been. Still, this was an excellent game. France looked flat in the first half but were much better in the second. A penalty brace by Cristiano Ronaldo (30th and 60th) gave Portugal a share of the points.

The game was pretty even with France having 53% of the possession with 11 shots at goal and five on target. Portugal were similar with ten shots at goal and five on target. A draw serves both teams well because it allows France to top the group and Portugal to progress.
Portugal has to sort out the goal scoring because they cannot only depend on Ronaldo. He is the leading scorer with five goals.
France has some issues as well, they have looked flat in this tournament but this was a tough group and they still came out on top.
Germany scrape home
Up until 84th minute Germany were out of the competition but Leon Gorezka strike sent Germany into wild celebrations and into the Round of 16. This was end to end excitement and a very tense game. Adam Szalai in the 11th minute shocked Germany with a wonderful goal but in the 66th Kai Havertz equalised.

On the resumption of the game Andras Schafer immediately scored in the 68th minute.
This was an excellent game, Germany dominated with 76% possession and 18 shots at goal with seven on target. Hungary had nine shots at goal with five on target.
Hungary is an excellent team and pushed all the other teams to the brink. It is sad to see them go out and they would have been in the next round if they were not in the group of death.
