A 29-year-old man is expected to appear virtually at the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court on Friday for the murder of a Gasparillo businessman.
Leon Apping, 29, of San Fabien Road, Gasparillo, was charged with the murder of businessman Anand Maharaj, on Thursday on the advice of acting Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Joan Honore-Paul.
On Saturday, Maharaj’s wife told Gasparillo Police that around 1.10pm on that day, her husband left home driving a silver coloured Nissan Note, with the intention to deliver to a client.
She said that the client was planning to rent the vehicle from her husband, who had also arranged to purchase US dollars from the said person. The woman reported that several calls to her husband’s phone thereafter went unanswered.
Officers conducted enquiries and were able to track the GPS on the vehicle and went to the San Fabien Road address, where a silver Nissan Note was spotted in the yard of the client.
Police received further information and returned to the home of the client at around 10.30pm, where a search warrant was executed, resulting in the discovery of the body of the businessman, inside the storage compartment of a couch in the living room.
Apping was arrested in relation to the death of Anand Maharaj, and taken to the Princes Town Police Station where he was charged with the murder.
Anand Maharaj, 60, was the owner of Tripple A Rentals in Gasparillo and vice president of the Gasparillo Business Association. His funeral takes on Friday.
His body is expected to be taken to the Shore of Peace site in La Romaine for cremation.
