COMISSIONER of Police Gary Griffith is suing an ex-national cricketer for defamation.
Former Trinidad and Tobago cricketer Deonarine Deyal is being sued for a Facebook post the made concerning the selection of Griffith’s son to the national men’s senior team suggesting that the younger Griffith was selected based on favouritism.
A subsequent article was also published in online publication Wired868. It was featured in an article under the headline “Fenwick adds 8 N/American players to T&T squad; no space for Cyrus and Lobo.” The post Deyal made was in January, the lawsuit was filed in May and last month Deyal was served with the proceedings. In January, he was served with a pre-action protocol letter but he never responded.
The lawsuit was filed by attorneys Larry Lalla, Taruna Mangroo and Vashisht Seepersad.
It stated, “The said/claimant word statements of the article have brought the claimant into public scandal, odium disrepute and contempt and have severely injured his character, credit and reputation in the estimation of right thinking persons generally and have caused the claimant considerable embarrassment and distress.”
Griffith is seeking to have all such publication ceased and legal cost covered amongst others.
A date for the hearing is still yet to be be fixed.
