THE first Gambling and Betting Control Commission has been appointed.
It will be chaired by banker Stephen Tang Nian. The deputy chairman is Stevan Thomas.
The nine-member commission also includes former acting police commissioner James Philbert.
Members of the commission were given their instruments of appointment on Monday by Minister of Finance Colm Imbert.
The members include:
- Chairman Stephen Tang Nian;
- Deputy Chairman Stevan Thomas;
- Kenwyn Ogeer;
- Jerome Herrera;
- Kalifa Julien;
- Dave Seerattan;
- James Philbert;
- Asa Archie; and
- Anil Maraj.
A release from the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday stated, “The Commission forms part of the regulatory framework which the Government has put in place to address the social concerns arising out of the proliferation of private member clubs providing casino-style games to the club members.
“Part 11, 5 (1) and (2) of the Gambling (Gaming and Betting) Control Act, No. 8 of 2021, provides for the establishment of a body corporate to be known as ‘the Gambling (Gaming and Betting) Control Commission,’ which shall be managed by a Board appointed by the President.”
