Former Police Commissioner Gibbs Dies in Australia

FORMER Trinidad and Tobago Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs has died in Australia after suffering a medical emergency during the Age Group Standard Aquabike Championships in Wollongong on October 16, 2025, Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro announced in a statement.

Gibbs, a Canadian national and former superintendent with the Edmonton Police Service, led the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) from 2010 to 2012. During his tenure, he and then–Deputy Commissioner Jack Ewatski pursued reforms aimed at strengthening the professionalism and effectiveness of the service, according to Guevarro.

In paying tribute, Guevarro described Gibbs as widely respected “for his integrity, discipline, and unwavering belief in the power of ethical leadership.” He added that Gibbs’ “passion for fitness and personal excellence was evident throughout his life,” noting it was “a testament to his character that he remained active and engaged in competitive sport well into his 70s.”

Guevarro extended condolences on behalf of the TTPS and the wider law enforcement community to Gibbs’ family, friends, and colleagues in Canada and Trinidad and Tobago, saying his legacy of service and leadership “will not be forgotten.” No additional details were immediately available.
