MORE than a year into the Covid-19 pandemic, persons playing team sports are getting frustrated that they are not being allowed to practice even though other sectors have begun opening up.

On Thursday, members of the football fraternity staged a silent protest near the Parliament building in Port-of-Spain to highlight their concerns.

They are hoping that government will reconsider the policy position soon on not allowing team sport activities.

Last week, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said his ministry could not yet give permission for the resumption of those types of activities. His comments followed the denial of permission for the Ascension football league to begin.

Speaking at the ministry’s Covid-19 update Deyalsingh said, “From the start of the pandemic, measures to be implemented are measures to be rolled back have always been the domain and the prerogative of the Honourable Prime Minister based on consultation with the Ministry of Health, myself, the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Hinds… for the example of team sports, beaches, safe zones, alcohol, full service.”
