TRINCITY -Trinidadian winger Tyrese Spicer has labelled his first season in Major League Soccer (MLS) with Toronto FC a success. The 24-year-old, who was the first overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, is now eyeing greater challenges, including a potential move to Europe.

“First, I’ve got a job to do in Toronto,” Spicer told Trinidadian media during a recent interview. “Hopefully, the sky’s the limit, and I can make the jump to Europe soon.”

Spicer made 19 league appearances for Toronto FC in his debut season, contributing two goals and an assist. He also added a goal in the Canadian Championship.

Despite his promising performances, Spicer’s rookie campaign was hampered by a back injury that sidelined him for 14 matches across all competitions from early June to late August.

When on the pitch, Spicer impressed under former TFC head coach John Herdman, who described him as “a joy to coach” and praised his “massive confidence and unshakeable belief in himself.” Herdman also suggested Spicer had the potential to follow in the footsteps of Canadian star Alphonso Davies.

With Herdman no longer at the helm, Spicer’s development will continue under a new manager in Toronto. However, the Trinidadian remains optimistic about his future with the club.

“Toronto FC is a big club, a massive one in MLS. I think my first season went well, and I’m determined to achieve bigger and better things in the seasons ahead.”
