Five Men From Tobago Held for Carriacou Bank Robbery

FIVE Trinidad and Tobago nationals were captured at sea on Monday following a daylight robbery on a bank in Carriacou, an island dependent of Grenada.

Parts of the high speed sea chase was captured live and shared on social media.

In a statement, Minister for Carricacou and Petite Martinique Kindra Maturine-Stewart praised the authorities for their swift intervention.

She said, “As the Member of Parliament for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, I applaud the law enforcement and security forces  on the island whose swift action today, Monday October 18, 2021 ensured that five foreign nationals allegedly implicated in the robbing of a bank in our peaceful community were captured.

“My office has been informed that men identified as all Trinidadian nationals were captured at sea during their attempted getaway  from the island after allegedly robbing the Carriacou branch of the Grenada Co-operative Bank located at Hillsborough, Carriacou.”

The minister said in recent years, government has invested greatly into ensuring the safety of the people but some security measures will be reviewed further adding that it was the second time in two years that the community was jolted “by what is effectively a cross-border raid by regional criminal elements.”

Maturine-Stewart also said, “We are thankful that none of our citizens were hurt during today’s dramatic development, though witnesses would have had some trauma since it is unusual in one of the most serene  and peaceful jurisdictions in this hemisphere.”

The five men caught are all from Tobago. Reports indicated that they were held as they tried to escape. The Grenada Coast Guard was notified and the men were captured during a high speed chase.

Eye witnesses said that two of the men entered the bank and robbed it of an undisclosed amount of cash before jumping into a pirogue in which three other men were waiting.

They were held shortly after.
