FIVE people were arrested and quantities of narcotics seized during police exercises conducted on Sunday, according to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS).

In a media release, the TTPS said the exercises were conducted on January 31 and led to the arrests of three men in the Central Division, one in the Southern Division and one in the South Western Division, all for narcotics offences. Officers in the Tobago Division also seized narcotics, the TTPS said.

The TTPS reported that, between 2 pm and 7 pm, officers attached to the Central Division Task Force, Area North and the Canine Unit conducted searches at the homes of several people of interest across the division.

Those searches resulted in the arrests of a 25-year-old man of Enterprise, Chaguanas, for possession of 174 grammes of cannabis; a 42-year-old man of no fixed place of abode for possession of one gramme of cocaine; and a 23-year-old man of Endeavour Road, Chaguanas, for possession of 72 grammes of cannabis, the TTPS said.

In the Southern Division, an 18-year-old man was arrested for possession of 340 grammes of cannabis, the TTPS reported.

The TTPS said officers, acting on intelligence, intercepted what they believed to be an exchange of money for drugs. During the incident, one man fled, while the suspect threw a red box into a nearby drain, the release stated.

“Officers pulled alongside the two men, at which point the unknown man looked in the direction of the marked police vehicle and fled the scene. At the same time, the suspect threw the red box into a nearby drain. The officers exited the vehicle and retrieved the box, which was found to contain rock-like solids,” the TTPS said.

A suspect was later captured, arrested and charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

In Tobago, officers from the Moriah Police Station seized six fully grown cannabis plants in an abandoned structure along Cradley Trace, Concordia, during an anti-crime exercise, the TTPS said.
