FEWER people with diabetes are becoming Covid-19 positive in Trinidad and Tobago.
This was revealed by Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram at the virtual presser of the Ministry of Health on Wednesday.
He said, “We see a dip in the number of persons with diabetes actually becoming positive.”
Referring to charts, Dr Parasram said, “A shift in the comorbidities has been noted.”
He said a couple months ago diabetes and hypertension would have accounted for the greatest portion of Covid-19 positive cases.
The CMO credited the immunization strategy where people over and under 60 years with comorbidities and healthcare workers were prioritized for the vaccine.
He said a lot of patients with diabetes have been getting their vaccines.
Dr Parasram added, “And we have to keep our eye on this statistic to see of it continues to drop. It’s a good sign because once you have diabetes together with Covid you tend to have complications.”
But he said that the number of asthmatic patients with Covid-19 seems to be increasing.
Dr Parasram said, “We have to get these people to have their vaccines as we move forward.”
He said the latest figures showed that the 39.4% of people in home isolation for Covid-19 have comorbidities.
The CMO stated that throughout the epidemic, people in the 20 to 60 age group have accounted for the greatest number of infections.
