FLOODING, fallen trees, landslides and collapsing walls were all reported on Friday due to Tropical Storm Elsa which was overnight strengthened into a category one hurricane.
In a release at 1pm by the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, the ministry listed the reports received some of which were highlighted by AZPNews.com.
They include: several reports from the Sangre Grande region of fallen trees and residential flooding, several reports from the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo region of street and residential flooding, reports of street flooding in the Mayaro/Rio Claro region, two reports from Diego Martin of fallen trees, one report from Port-of Spain of a fallen tree, one report from the San Juan/ Laventille region of a collapsed retaining wall and land slippage and one report of a landslide in Siparia.
Rural Development Minister Kazim Hosein is assuring the public that the Disaster Management Units (DMUs) remain on high alert and assessment of affected areas were presently being conducted.
The release stated, “The Ministry advises that its Disaster Management personnel stand ready and equipped to mobilize and coordinate in the event of flooding and any other hazards. Citizens are reminded to be prepared, stay updated and to contact their respective Disaster Management Unit for sandbags if needed prior to the adverse weather system.”
